Rstaurant Review: Fressen
If you’re vegan or vegetarian and want to go to a fancy restaurant, but don’t want to sort through veggie-skint menus, Fressen on Queen Street West not only fits the bill, but completely delivers with plate after plate of delicious food that is both good and good for you.
My date and I sampled four dishes from Stephen Gardner’s menu: One salad, two mains, and a dessert. Our server recommened we share dishes, which ended up working out just fine, even though I can be quite the food hog.
The jicama and celery root salad (marinated in lime and chili) was beyond fantastic. The second dish, squash ravioli, was good, but starchy.
We followed that with seared portobello mushroom in veggie aujous with roasted potatoes. This was so good our server caught me scraping the bottom of the dish for remnants. This would be a good time to mention that we paired our meal with an Argentinian Shiraz, which also kicked ass.
Desert was a chocolate torte made with walnuts and Jack Daniels (score!) which was artfully surrounded by an assortment of fruits and a sprig of mint. This was also delicious.
The atmosphere at Fressen is fancy, but welcoming, and the food is plated with a heavy dose of creativity. Recommended for herbivores and carnivores with an adventurous palette.
